Depression & Sexual Function – Novelty-Suppressed Feeding (Chronic)

This test assesses depression by measuring the latency of an animal to approach and eat food in a novel environment following chronic treatment with antidepressants. The test is very sensitive to chronic antidepressant treatment but insensitive to acute treatment. Novelty suppressed feeding is therefore one of the few behavioral tests differentially sensitive to chronic versus acute administration of antidepressants.

Chronic (28 day) administration of imipramine (60 mg/kg; po) decreases the latency to eat in C57Bl/6J mice.
