Removal of the olfactory bulb in rats causes a state of monoamine dysfunction in rats comparable to that seen in human patients suffering from depression. The phenotype produced is associated with behavioral abnormalities including hyperactivity. Compared to normal rats, OBX rats show a marked hyperactivity that is normalized only upon chronic treatment with antidepressants and not acute treatment.

Acute imipramine and escitalopram have no effect on activity of the OBX rats
Chronic imipramine and escitalopram normalizes activity of the OBX rats
