Removal of the olfactory bulb in rats is associated with a variety of behavioral abnormalities including hyperactivity in the “open field” test. Chronic, but not acute, administration of antidepressants reduces the olfactory bulbectomy-induced hyperactivity in rats.
In olfactory bulbectomized Sprague Dawley rats, chronic (14 days), but not acute, administration of imipramine (20 mg/kg) and escitalopram (10 mg/kg) reverses the hyperactivity observed in these rats.
Chronic imipramine and escitalopram normalizes activity of the OBX rats.
