The novel object recognition task is widely used as a test of recognition memory. The test utilizes the natural tendency of rodents to explore a novel object rather than a familiar object when both are presented simultaneously. This test assesses the animal's ability to recall a familiar vs novel object when re-exposed to the objects after a delay. The difference in time spent exploring each object during the test trial is used as an index of recognition of the previously explored, familiar object.

Galantamine significantly increases Recognition Index after 48 hrs compared to the saline group. The 1 hr saline group also acts as a non-pharmacological control with a high recognition index.
