Injury & Pain – Nerve Ligation Models of Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is a common chronic pain disorder affecting 1.6% of the population. Damage to peripheral somatosensory nerves causes chronic pain in response to otherwise innocuous stimuli, such as heat or cold. Neuropathic pain is difficult to manage due to the lack of efficacy of standard analgesics such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Nerve injury models such as the ‘Bennett’ (sciatic nerve) and ‘Chung’ (spinal nerve) models have been developed and successfully used to test therapeutic compounds.
