This technique provides insight into the effects of drugs on neurotransmission, or the effects of a mutation on brain function by measuring the levels of neurochemicals. PsychoGenics has the ability to test neurotransmitter levels in free moving rats or mice, including Serotonin (5-HT), Norepinephrine(NE), and Dopamine(DA). Typically PsychoGenics samples the subjects in the prefrontal cortex of the rat.

A typical experiment runs as follows:

On Monday and Tuesday of a week animals are provided with a microdialysis probe in the prefrontal cortex (N=10). On Wednesday and Thursday (2 days after the operation) animals are dialyzed for a whole day. First a baseline is determined during the first hour, the drug (dose) is administered and during the following hours a sample is collected every 30 min. All samples are collected, and stored until HPLC-analysis.

The dopamine reuptake blocker GBR12909 (10 mg/kg, IP) enhances the extracellular concentration of dopamine (DA) in the striatum of mice.
