IDD delivers drug to the spinal cord. Drugs delivered directly to the intrathecal space are particularly effective because they don't circulate systemically to reach the cerebrospinal fluid. This allows for the use of less drugs compared to oral delivery and can help eliminate unwanted side effects. The method of i.c.v. injection of drugs is a simple and useful technique for studying the central actions of drugs in animals because many drugs do not cross the blood- brain barrier, which limits the extent of drug action to the CNS.
Similar to methylphenidate (Ritalin), d-amphetamine was highly efficacious.
