The hot plate and plantar tests measures the latency to respond to a thermal threshold. These tests, together with tail flick are used to assess differences in the threshold between phenotypes and to test the analgesic or hyperalgesic properties of compounds.

Morphine is seen to increase the latency to lift the paw in response to a thermal stimulus, in a dose dependent manner.
