This task measures several cognitive and motivational parameters though its widest use focuses on impulsivity and attention. Attention is a general term that pertains to the allocation of sensory capacities to deal with the abundance of environmental stimulation. In this operant-based test, animals are required to be attentive and withhold responding while monitoring five apertures for a brief illumination behind one of these apertures. Rats must nose-poke into the correct aperture (where the brief light stimulus was presented) to receive a food reward. Behavioral measures such as accuracy, errors, speed of response, impulsivity, can be recorded and quantified. Stimulant and non-stimulant compounds can be differentiated in this assay. The standard 5CSRTT protocol can be modified to probe different components of cognitive function.

                                                                                              (B)
Prolonged inter-trial interval induces high levels of premature responding. These high levels of responding are decreased by atomoxetine (A) and increased by amphetamine (B).
